Mason’s “Mandalay” Ironstone Oval Dish (England)

Marked Mason’s Patent Ironstone—Mandalay—Made in England, this example dates circa 1960s—pre-Wedgwood acquisition (1973)—identified by the crown-and-banner backstamp in iron-red.

First patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason, ironstone became the durable everyday “china” of the industrial age; Mandalay is its 20th-century revival—opulent color and hand-touched detail made for postwar tables that wanted both resilience and ceremony. Today it sings as a centerpiece, fruit dish, or wall display, bringing that same Staffordshire theater of color to contemporary rooms.
