American Art Pottery, 1940s

There’s a quiet warmth in the pottery of the 1940s — a softness that feels like home. This Roseville Apple Blossom basket captures that spirit perfectly. Formed from creamy ceramic and finished in rose and brown tones, it carries a delicate relief of yellow blossoms and green leaves winding across its curved body. The sculpted handle, shaped to resemble a branch, arcs gracefully overhead — both decorative and strong, just as Roseville intended.

This piece belongs to the Apple Blossom line, introduced by Roseville Pottery in 1948, one of the company’s final and most beloved series. The basket’s asymmetrical body and high loop handle reflect the mid-century blend of naturalism and Art Deco form — a transition between eras in American design. The glaze reveals fine craquelure, that subtle network of lines that comes only with age, giving the surface a luminous depth.

Each Apple Blossom piece was hand-finished, its details brushed with color and kiln-fired in Ohio during the final years of Roseville’s production. What remains today is more than pottery — it’s the trace of a time when beauty and function were held in equal regard.

Display this basket as a centerpiece, a vessel for dried flowers, or a sculptural accent that bridges rustic warmth and refined artistry.
